DE State Auditor: Marijuana legalization could generate $43 million annually

A report from Delaware’s state auditor said that legalizing and taxing marijuana could bring in $43 million a year in revenue.

The News Journal reports that the estimate was released Monday by Auditor Kathy McGuiness.

The report estimates that 13% of adults in Delaware would use marijuana. That’s based on data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The report assumes that there would be a 20% tax on the plant.

“That money could be used to plug budget holes in the short term and would continue to provide revenue for all kinds of important initiatives in the long term,” said McGuiness, who supports legalization.

The report also said that legalization would create more than 1,000 new jobs over five years. The report said that legalization would create a $215 million industry in Delaware.

  1. This is why state governments won’t ban cigarettes, no matter how harmful. They just generate too much tax revenue that politicians can spend.

  2. Hell , Cocaine could Generate 10 times that & so could Legal Prostitution , which Kamala Harris wants !!!!!

    What ever generates TAXES !!!

  3. DE: Having their cake & eating it too!

Health PSAs say don’t smoke. DE collects $1.60 for each pack of smokes. Lotsa money.

So logically, let’s tax weed; big money pot there, too! Of course, weed smokers are accustomed to using informal channels to buy. And let’s wink at health and impairment issues if the state can hustle a buck.

Not a smoker of anything but BBQ.

  4. Ongoing problem with tobacco is roughly 25% of the country smokes/chews tobacco products today. Shunning and explaining it is bad for you has lowered the numbers greatly in the last 20 yrs. What did govt do? Panic and the only thing they could do to keep their nut…TAXES. Doesnt matter its bad and the minority shuns it…its revenue and they will never make it illegal.

Now the conundrum is for 2 centuries, illegal drugs have been shunning hence the war on drugs. Science is much more advanced today where the pot plant and other drugs have found to help those with different sicknesses. Then someone said using pot to help could be marketable in a sense. Much more talk and newer mindsets open the door to legalizing pot and all sorts of forms. Then govts said hold the fort here a possible revenue stream and they got lobbiests involved. You know the rest. Its coming…its here. Is it good? Well i suppose that mindset also said the same under prohibition. Look at alcohol consumption today?

Its still up to the individual at the end of the day, with laws in place. Me? I wont smoke pot, but sure as hell will make brownies in the future! Figure get my pot intake as well as taking care of my munchies at the same time!

    (snicker snicker)

The world we live in today. Wow
