Maryland has a deficit. So, where are the budget reductions?

There is an old saying that serves as a guiding principle for certain aspects of life: When you are in a hole, your first action should be to stop digging.

Apparently Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) never heard that. How else can one explain the governor’s refusal to implement a hiring freeze on state employment?

I am hopeful that the governor has a good explanation for his refusal to act on one of the very basic principles of costs control. Stop increasing your personnel costs. Surely it has nothing to do with the support and political influence of government unions.

It should be noted that Maryland state employees are, for the most part, hard-working dedicated individuals who accept that Maryland salaries are lower than some competitors’ but benefits are better.

That does not mean, however, that the number of employees should increase annually, as Moore has done increasing the number of state employees by more than 5,000 at a cost increase to taxpayers of $2 billion in two years.

This failure foreshadows many other aspects of the governor’s fiscal year 2026 budget proposal.
